The roll-out of WiMAX services has begun via Société du Haut Débit (SHD), a joint venture between Neuf Cegetel, SFR and Canal+. SHD has obtained two regional WiMAX licences in the Ile-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions and begun the roll-out of the first sites in four departments of the Ile-de-France region. WiMAX is a terrestrial broadband data transmission technology able to provide services regions with no or limited fixed-line broadband coverage. In particular, it offers high speed internet access, VoIP services and interconnection of company networks.
Different WiMAX networks are also being rolled out on the initiative of local authorities in areas such as the Loiret and Haut-Rhin regions under public service contracts managed by subsidiary LD Collectivités.
